Some of the poetry in this volume is preserved in þættir and sagas within compendia covered in the notes above. Thus for the skaldic poetry contained in the following, see Flat above: Fær; Styrmir Kárason, Lífssaga Óláfs helga; and the þættir EindrErl, HarHárf, SSlef and Styrb. For Helg, Stefn and ÞorvT, see ÓT above. For RagnSon, see Hb above, and SkP VIII.
The remaining sources, listed below, are either þættir for which mss additional to Flat or Hb have been used, or sagas belonging to genres other than the kings’ sagas.

Recent research (Wiktorsson 1987; Österholm in ÞorlJ 1987; Österholm 1991) suggests that some of the post-medieval mss of ÞorlJ may represent a more original state of the text than Flat, which has a revised text. Two of these, mss 4867ˣ and 563aˣ, are therefore used in SkP I as representatives of the two main sub-groups of this unrevised branch of the stemma (see Wiktorsson 1987, 69; Österholm 1991, 90). Other post-medieval mss containing the ÞorlJ stanzas but not included in the present edition are: AM 552g 4toˣ (included in the variants in Skj but argued by Wiktorsson and Österholm to be a transcript of Flat), NKS 1814 folˣ, NKS 1712 4toˣ, and Lbs 1442 4toˣ.
