This single helmingr (Þjsk Jarl) is preserved only in ÞorlJ, where it is said to be the beginning (upphaf) of the Þokuvísur ‘Fog Vísur’, part of a composite poem Jarlsníð ‘Níð against the jarl’. Jarlsníð appears to be a title, but could alternatively be taken as a descriptive phrase. Þorleifr’s composition of níð or abuse about Hákon jarl Sigurðarson (r. c. 970-c. 995) is the best-attested element in his biography. It is the topic of Svtjúg Lv, where Jarlsníð occurs in l. 4; see also Hhal Lv, Context, as well as ÞorlJ (ÍF 9, 220-3), Snegl (ÍF 9, 285-6), ÓTOdd (ÍF 25, 191) and HaukrV Ísldr 18IV. The helmingr is also the only one of those attributed to Þorleifr in ÞorlJ whose authenticity has not been seriously doubted, though Almqvist (1965-74, I, 186-205), in his excellent study of the poetry in ÞorlJ, suggests it may originally have stood in the narrative where Lv 5 (almost certainly a later composition) now is. The mss used here are Flat as main ms., 4867ˣ and 563aˣ (see the entry for ÞorlJ in ‘Sources’ in Introduction to this volume).
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
