Býð ek yðr at Dylgju,         ok á Dúnheiði,
orrustu undir         Jassarfjöllum;
†hræsi yðr         at há hverju†
ok láti svá Óðinn flein fljúga,         sem ek fyrir mæli!

Ek býð yðr orrustu at Dylgju ok á Dúnheiði undir Jassarfjöllum; †hræsi yðr at há hverju† ok láti Óðinn flein fljúga svá, sem ek mæli fyrir!

I offer you battle at Dylgja and on Dúnheiðr under Jassarfjǫll; … and may Óðinn let the spear fly as I determine!

Mss: 203ˣ(111v), R715ˣ(34v-35r) (Heiðr)

Readings: [4] Jassar‑: ‘Josur‑’ corrected from Jassar in the margin in another hand 203ˣ, ‘Jassa’ R715ˣ    [5] hræsi: hrósi apparently corrected from an original blank space in another hand R715ˣ    [6] há: hái R715ˣ;    hverju: hverjum R715ˣ

Editions: Skj AII, 255, Skj BII, 275, Skald II, 143, NN §2377, FF §22; Heiðr 1672, 174, FSN 1, 501-2, Heiðr 1873, 283-4, Heiðr 1924, 152-3, FSGJ 2, 64, Heiðr 1960, 56 (Heiðr); Edd. Min. 10, NK 309, ÍF Edd. II, 428.

Context: The stanza is introduced (Heiðr 1960, 56): Ok enn ‘And again’.

Notes: [1-4]: Echoes, though not exactly, Angantýr’s instructions to Gizurr in Heiðr 111. — [1-4]: On the place names, see Notes to Heiðr 111/1, 2 and 4. — [5-6]: Suggestions for emendations to these lines are varied and conjectural. — [7-8]: Cf. Vsp 24/1-2 (NK 6): Fleygði Óðinn | oc í fólc um scaut ‘Óðinn let fly [a spear] and shot [it] into the troop’. There are a number of examples of Óðinn consecrating an enemy army to himself by shooting a spear over their troop, or of human participants consecrating an army to Óðinn by doing the same: see e.g. Eyrb ch. 44 (ÍF 4, 122): En er flokkrinn Snorra gekk neðan skriðuna, þá skaut Steinþórr spjóti at fornum sið til heilla sér yfir flokk Snorra ‘And when Snorri’s troop went up the scree, Steinþórr shot a spear over Snorri’s troop for luck according to the ancient custom’. See also ARG II, 49 (§376), Turville-Petre (1964, 47). Line 7 is unmetrical with svá Óðinn being extrametrical.
