Anon (SnE) 14^III

These three lines (Anon (SnE) 14) are preserved in mss R (main ms.), Tˣ and A of Skm (SnE), while mss B and C only give the first two. The fourth line is omitted in all mss, but in A there is an open space after the last word, indicating that the scribe may have intended to fill it in later. Finnur Jónsson dates the stanza to the tenth century, but it cannot be dated on linguistic or metrical criteria.

Context: In Skm the three lines illustrate a heiti for ‘wave’ (boði).

Notes: [1] of mik ‘around me’: So Tˣ, B and A (the latter has the later form um rather than of). Mss R and C have the prep. á ‘on’, which is also possible (and adopted in SnE 1848-87 and SnE 1998). — [1] brálla ‘suddenly’: This is a variant form of bráðla (so B), which is adopted in Skj B and Skald. That form has support only in one ms., however, and the rhyme on the syllables fell and bráll- is better than the rhyme on boð- and bráðl- in this D4-line. — [2] geimi ‘the sea’: Lit. ‘extensive one’. This heiti is also recorded in Þul Sjóvar 1/5.  — [3] þák eigi ‘I did not accept’: So Tˣ (and adopted in earlier eds). Mss R and C have þá er ‘when’, which cannot be construed to make any sense in this context. — [3] lǫð ‘the hospitality’: For a discussion of this word, see NN §2255. — [3] lœgis ‘of the ocean’: The sea-heiti lœgir lit. ‘calm one’ is also given in Þul Sjóvar 1/3.
