Øxna heiti — Þul ØxnaIII

Anonymous Þulur

Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Øxna heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 885. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3210> (accessed 28 April 2024)

This þula (Þul Øxna) contains heiti for ‘oxen’ and is recorded in mss R (main ms.), , C, A and B (and 744ˣ) of Skm (SnE). In B, the þula has the chapter heading Øxna heiti ‘Names for oxen’, which is illegible in R and A and omitted in , C. The verse structure in A and B differs from that of the other mss. In these two mss, the introductory formula in st. 1/1-2 (R: Enn skal segja | øxna heiti ‘In addition I shall say names for oxen’) has been expanded to a helmingr (A: Ek man skýra | fyr skata mengi | allramligra | yxna heiti ‘I shall expound for a multitude of men names for very strong oxen’), evidently to attain a sequence of regular eight-line stanzas. Thus the stanzaic division of the entire þula has been altered accordingly in the A, B redaction. As shown by the distribution of capital letters in A and B, st. 2 starts after st. 1/6 (Rauðr ok rekningr), the beginning of st. 3 is after st. 2/4 (Hliðr, stufr ok litr) and the beginning of st. 4 after st. 3/4 (Griðungr, olgr, gellir). The þula is preceded by Þul Jarðar in R, , C and by Þul Viðar in A, B, and it is followed by Þul Hrúts in all the mss. Eleven of the heiti for ‘oxen’ in sts 1-3 are also given in LaufE (LaufE 1979, 310, 402; mss papp10ˣ(53v), 3638ˣ(136), 743ˣ(101r)) under heiti for ‘oxen’, and st. 4 is given in its entirety under heiti for ‘cows’ (LaufE 1979, 295, 380; mss papp10ˣ(49r), 3638ˣ(120), 743ˣ(91r)). The variants show that both entries are derived from the R, , C redaction, and LaufE has not been considered in the present edition. The corresponding sections in RE 1665(Ll 3; Kk) are copied from LaufE and have no independent value.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
