Í höll skaltu ganga         ok hilmi* lúta,
ok kveðja kurteisliga         konung inn stórráða.
Láttu eigi æðru         á þér finna,
þótt þú í höll lítir         háva stórgarpa.

Skaltu ganga í höll ok lúta hilmi*, ok kveðja inn stórráða konung kurteisliga. Láttu eigi finna æðru á þér, þótt þú lítir háva stórgarpa í höll.

You must go into the hall and bow to the ruler, and greet the ambitious king courteously. Do not let fear be visible upon you, even though you see tall powerful warriors in the hall.

Mss: 109a IIIˣ(273r), papp6ˣ(53r), ÍBR5ˣ(95) (HjǪ)

Readings: [2] hilmi*: hilmir all

Editions: Skj AII, 338, Skj BII, 359, Skald II, 194; HjǪ 1720, 47-8, FSN 3, 492, FSGJ 4, 216, HjǪ 1970, 39, 94, 155.

Context: Upon Hǫrðr’s instruction, Hjálmþér presents Hervǫr with a number of treasures Hǫrðr had taken from the cave of the giant father of the sea-ogresses the heroes had killed earlier. She accepts them with pleasure and continues with more detailed advice on how they should behave in her father’s presence, warning Hjálmþér indirectly of Hástigi, Hundingi’s evil and jealous counsellor.
