Hringr konungrLausavísur
12

Far þú eigi svá,         Friðþjófr, heðan,
dýrstr döglinga,         í döprum hug.
Mun ek þér gjafir         þínar launa
víst betr, en þik         um varir sjálfan.

Far þú eigi svá heðan, Friðþjófr, dýrstr döglinga, í döprum hug. Ek mun víst launa þér gjafir þínar betr, en þik sjálfan um varir.

Do not go from here in this way, Friðþjófr, most splendid of princes, in a downcast mood. I will reward you for your gifts certainly better than you yourself expect.

Mss: 510(96r), Holm10 VI(3v), 568ˣ(103r), 27ˣ(139r), papp17ˣ(362v), 1006ˣ(597), 173ˣ(94r) (Frið)

Readings: [1] Far þú: ‘[…]’ 568ˣ;    eigi: ei 568ˣ, 27ˣ, papp17ˣ, 1006ˣ, 173ˣ    [3] döglinga: so Holm10 VI, 568ˣ, 27ˣ, drengr 510, döglingr papp17ˣ, 1006ˣ, 173ˣ    [4] hug: so all others, huga 510    [5] Mun ek þér gjafir: so Holm10 VI, 27ˣ, mun ek gjafir 510, ‘mun ek […]’ 568ˣ, þér mun ek gjalda papp17ˣ, 1006ˣ, 173ˣ    [6] launa: hnossir papp17ˣ, 1006ˣ, 173ˣ    [7] víst betr: so all others, betr 510    [8] um: om. papp17ˣ, 1006ˣ, 173ˣ;    varir sjálfan: sjálfan varir Holm10 VI, 568ˣ

Editions: Skj AII, 278, Skj BII, 300, Skald II, 158; Falk 1890, 87, Frið 1893, 35, 59, 88, Frið 1901, 49-50, Frið 1914, 32-3; Edd. Min. 103.

Context: King Hringr replies immediately to Frið 38 with these words.

Notes: [All]: The stanza is in both A and B recension mss, with the exception of 109a IIˣ. The metre is fornyrðislag. — [3] dýrstr döglinga ‘most splendid of princes’: Most eds, including this one, follow the wording of the A redaction mss (with the exception of 510), as it gives a metrically regular line. — [5-6]: With Edd. Min. and Frið 1914 this edn follows the wording of Holm10 VI and 27ˣ rather than that of the B redaction mss, preferred by Frið 1901, Skj B and Skald: þér mun ek gjalda | þínar hnossir ‘I will reward you for your precious objects’ (hnoss is used of the ring Friðþjófr gives Ingibjǫrg in Frið 37/8). — [7-8] betr, en þik sjálfan um varir ‘better than you yourself expect’: The main ms. (510) here has the more archaic reading of varir, which has been normalised to um varir (see Note to Ásm 1/3, 5). The verb vara ‘expect’ is used impersonally, with acc. of the person who expects something and gen. of what is expected.
