Metnað þinn, þótt þik menn lofi,
lát eigi magnaz til mjök;
hælins manns orði þarftu eigi hverju at trúa;
sjálfr kunn þú sjálfan þik.
Lát eigi metnað þinn magnaz til mjök, þótt menn lofi þik; þarftu eigi at trúa hverju orði hælins manns; kunn þú sjálfr þik sjálfan.
‘Do not let your pride become too great, even though people are praising you; you do not need to believe every word of a boastful man; you yourself [must] know yourself.’

Lat. parallel: (Dist. I, 14) Cum te aliquis laudat, iudex tuus esse memento; / plus aliis de te quam tu tibi credere noli ‘When someone praises you, remember to be your own judge; do not believe more from others about yourself than you believe of yourself’. The first half is parallelled in Hsv 66.
