Hjartar heiti — Þul HjartarIII

Anonymous Þulur

Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Hjartar heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 898. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3214> (accessed 4 May 2024)

This þula (Þul Hjartar) contains heiti for ‘stag’, and it is recorded in mss R (main ms.), , C, A and B (and 744ˣ) of Skm (SnE). In R, , C, Þul Hjartar is treated as a continuation of the preceding Þul Bjarnar and not as a distinct list of heiti. In mss A and B, the þula has the heading Hjartar heiti ‘Names for stag’ (A, 744ˣ; ‘[…]tar heiti’ B), and in both mss (B represented by 744ˣ) the first heiti in the list, Hjǫrtr is capitalised (in A, like the heading, written in red ink). In all mss Þul Hjartar is followed by Þul Galtar. The list is not included in LaufE, but the names are given in RE 1665(Gg 2) with the heading Hiartar heite. Hiorter kaldis. Cervi appellantur ‘Names for stag. Stags are called. Stags are called’. The variants show that the list must have been copied from a ms. related to A and B (see also Resen 1977, 42), and they have been included in the present edition. See also Introduction to Þul Bjarnar.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
