Anonymous Þulur

Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Galtar heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 900. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3215> (accessed 27 April 2024)

This þula (Þul Galtar) contains heiti for ‘boar’, and it is recorded in mss R (main ms.), , C, A and B (and 744ˣ) of Skm (SnE). In ms. A, the þula has the chapter heading Galtar heiti ‘Names for boar’, written in red ink as is usual in that ms. The heading is illegible in R and omitted in , C, B. Only a few of the heiti recorded in this þula are found in the corresponding section of Skm (SnE 1998, I, 90), which lists the following: Svín: sýr, gylta, runi, gǫltr, gríss ‘Swine: sow, young sow, hog, boar, pig’. In all the mss, Þul Galtar is preceded by Þul Hjartar and followed by Þul Vargs. Seven of the heiti listed in this þula are also included in LaufE (LaufE 1979, 273, 345; mss papp10ˣ(42r), 2338ˣ(91), 743ˣ(71v)) copied from a version closest to the R, , C redaction, and the same heiti are given in RE 1665(Ff), copied from a ms. of the LaufE Y branch. Neither LaufE nor RE 1665 has been considered in the present edition.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
