Hvala heiti — Þul HvalaIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Hvala heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 857. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3207> (accessed 27 April 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Hvala) contains
heiti for ‘whales’. It is recorded in mss R (main ms.),
Tˣ, C, A and B (and
744ˣ) of
SnE. In mss A and B the
þula has the chapter heading
Hvala heiti ‘Names for whales’ (in A, as usual, written in red ink); the heading is illegible in R and omitted in
Tˣ and C. In all mss,
Þul Hvala is preceded by
Þul Fiska and followed by
Þul Skipa. Most of the whales whose
heiti are enumerated in this
þula are discussed and described in
Konungs skuggsjá (
Kgs,
Holm-Olsen 1983, 15-17; see also
Schnall 1994), but only four occur in poetry (i.e.
hnísa,
reyðr ‘porpoise, rorqual’, st. 1/3, 5;
skeljungr,
vǫgn ‘humpback, orca’, st. 2/3, 8). With the exception of
reyðarkalfr ‘rorqual-calf’ (st. 1/5) all of these
heiti are included in
LaufE (
LaufE 1979, 273, 351; mss
papp10ˣ(42r-v),
2368ˣ(94),
743ˣ(74r)) in the same order as in the
þula and following the R,
Tˣ, C redaction (with one exception; see Note to st. 2/1 below). They are also found (with translation and commentary in Latin and Danish) in RE 1665(Ff 3). Neither of these versions has been considered in the present edition.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
