Fiska heiti — Þul FiskaIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Fiska heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 852. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3206> (accessed 25 April 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Fiska) enumerates
heiti for ‘fish’. It is recorded in mss R (main ms. for sts 1, 2, 4),
Tˣ, C, A (main ms. for st. 3) and B (and
744ˣ) of
Skm (
SnE). In mss A and B the
þula has the chapter heading
Fiska heiti ‘Names for fish’ (in A it is written in red ink); the heading is illegible in R and omitted in
Tˣ and C. In all the mss,
Þul Fiska is preceded by
Þul Á and followed by
Þul Hvala. The
heiti for ‘fish’ in
Skm are discussed in
Nordgaard (1912) and
Kristensen (1917); see also
Bjarni Sæmundsson (1926). With three exceptions (
langa ‘ling’ st. 1/1,
hœingr ‘male salmon’ st. 1/3,
ǫlunn ‘mackerel’ st. 1/7), all of the
heiti in the present
þula are recorded in
LaufE (
LaufE 1979, 269, 344; mss
papp10ˣ(41r),
2368ˣ(90),
743ˣ(71r)), and in the same order as in the
þula. The
LaufE version follows ms. R (with the same variants, and also with the same order of
heiti as in the R, C version of st. 3 below). The
heiti are also found in RE 1665(Ff), where they are accompanied by translations and comments in Latin and Danish. Neither
LaufE nor RE 1665 has been considered for the present edition.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
