Ása heiti I — Þul Ása IIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Ása heiti I’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 754. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3187> (accessed 4 May 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Ása I) contains the names of the gods (the Æsir) who, according to the
þula and
Skm (
SnE 1998,
I, 14, 17, 19), are the sons of the god Óðinn (but see
Gade 2006). It is recorded in mss R,
Tˣ, C, A and B (and
744ˣ) of
Skm (
SnE). In the sequence of
þulur in the R,
Tˣ, C redaction it is preceded by
Þul Þórs and followed by
Þul Jǫtna II, while in mss A and B (and
744ˣ) it is preceded by
Þul Óðins and followed by
Þul Þórs (on the order of
þulur in the two main groups of mss, see Introduction to Anon
Þulur). The mss have the following chapter headings:
Ása heiti ‘Names of the gods’ (C), ‘asa hetia’ (R),
Heiti sona Óðins ‘Names of Óðinn’s sons’ (A and B (represented by
744ˣ), in the former as usual written in red ink), and
Sonir Óðins ‘Óðinn’s sons’ (
Tˣ). Half of the names enumerated in this
þula are mentioned in
Þul Ása II as well. These are
Þórr (l. 5),
Yngvi-Freyr (l. 7),
Víðarr (l. 3),
Baldr (l. 2),
Váli (l. 4),
Heimdallr (l. 9),
Hǫðr and
Bragi (l. 10). The latter two names are recorded only in A and B, while in the other group of mss the last line is omitted (see Introductions to
Þul Þórs and
Þul Ása II). Ms. A is therefore the main ms. for the present edition. Most of the names in this
þula are recorded in
LaufE (
LaufE 1979, 257
Heite sona Ödins ‘Names of Óðinn’s sons’; 332
Syner Odins ‘Óðinn’s sons’) and the variants show that the
þula was copied from A or from a ms. closely related to A. In A (and B) the
þula is followed directly by
Þul Þórs (see above and Introduction to
Þul Þórs), and in
LaufE the names enumerated in that
þula were included erroneously in the present list among the names of Óðinn’s sons.
Þul Ása I was copied from a ms. of
LaufE in RE 1665(Cc3), including the Þórr
-heiti as in
LaufE. Neither
LaufE nor RE 1665 has been considered in the present edition.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
