Jǫtna heiti II — Þul Jǫtna IIIII

Anonymous Þulur

Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Jǫtna heiti II’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 718. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3188> (accessed 26 April 2024)

This is the second þula (Þul Jǫtna II) to contain the names of giants, and it is recorded in mss R (main ms.), , C, A and B (and 744ˣ) of SnE. In the sequence of þulur in mss R, and C, Þul Jǫtna II is preceded by Þul Ása I and followed by Þul Ása II, whereas in A and B the two þulur of Jǫtna heiti are collapsed into one list and followed by Þul Trollkvenna. As regards its content and verse structure, the text of this þula has noticeable differences in some mss, which is reflected both in the Readings and in the Notes below. In ms. C, the stanzaic division of the entire þula has been altered in such a way that it consists of regular eight-line stanzas. As shown by the distribution of capital letters in C, st. 2 starts after l. 8 (Vænir, Harðgreipr) and has a different ending (see Notes to st. 2/5-6, 6, 7); st. 3 starts with the names Ofláti, Hlói | ok Helreginn (see Notes to st. 2/6) and has a concluding statement: þá er nú lokit | þursa heitum ‘then the names of giants have now come to an end’ (ll. 7-8). In A and B, structural regularity has been attained by other means. In these mss, Þul Jǫtna II has been merged with Þul Jǫtna I into one list of heiti (see also Note to st. 1/1-2 below and Note to Þul Jǫtna I 6/6-8). The heiti in this list, as well as most of those included in Þul Jǫtna I, are recorded in LaufE (LaufE 1979, 282, 359-60; see Introduction to Þul Jǫtna I). The arrangement of the names and the structure of the þula follow that of mss A and B and, with one exception (see Note to st. 2/2), the variants are similar to the A variants. The same list is given in alphabetical order in RE 1665(Gg3). Neither LaufE nor RE 1665 has been considered in the present edition. The names Glámr and Vagnhǫfði (st. 1/8, 10) are also recorded in Allra flagða þula ‘The þula of all trolls’ in Vilhjálms saga sjóðs (Loth 1962-5, IV, 66-7).

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
