This þula (Þul Þórs) is recorded in mss R (main ms.), Tˣ, C, A and B (and 744ˣ) of Skm (SnE). The þula contains names for the god Þórr, the thunder god and one of Óðinn’s sons. In the sequence of þulur in mss R, Tˣ and C, Þul Þórs is preceded by Þul Trollkvenna and followed by Þul Ása I, but in mss A and B this order has been changed. In the latter two mss Þul Þórs is preceded by Þul Ása I and followed by Þul Ása II (see also the Introduction to Anon Þulur). This þula is introduced by a rubric only in ms. Tˣ: Þórs heiti ‘Þórr’s names’. The absence of a heading and the divergent order of names in the opening lines in mss A and B (Heitir Atli | ok Ennilangr | Þórr ‘Þórr is called Atli and Ennilangr’ vs. R, Tˣ, C Þórr heitir Atli | ok Ásabragr ‘Þórr is called Atli and Ásabragr’), most likely indicate that, in A and B, the list of Þórr’s names is treated not as a separate þula but as a part of the preceding Þul Ása I, the þula that enumerates the names of Óðinn’s sons (cf. the heading in these mss, Heiti sona Óðins ‘Names of Óðinn’s sons’; see also SnE 1848-87, II, 473). In fact, the LaufE (LaufE 1979, 257, 332) and RE 1665(Cc3) versions of this þula were based on ms. A or a closely related ms., and in these redactions Þul Ása I and Þul Þórs have been collapsed into one list (see Introduction to Þul Ása I). Thus the structure of Þul Ása I in mss A and B resembles that of Þul Ásynja, since the þula with the names of the goddesses also devotes one of its stanzas (st. 3) to the heiti of one particular deity, namely, Freyja. Kock (Skald) considers ‘Þórr’ (l. 1) a heading, however, and he excludes it from the poetic text (Heitir Atli | ok Ásabragr ‘Is called Atli and Ásabragr’). That interpretation is hardly justified because other headings in ms. A are written in red ink and none of these rubrics merely names the referent of a þula without adding to it the words heiti or nǫfn.
