The word is possibly related to hrúga f. ‘heap’ (Ásgeir Blöndal Magnússon 1950, 121; ÍO: hró 1). Alternatively, it may be connected with hrúðr m. ‘crust, scab’ (cf. Lat. crēscō ‘grow’; AEW: hró).
