Notes: [All]: The various versions of Ǫrv 134 differ somewhat. In the younger mss the stanza occurs only in the continuous Ævdr and has no counterpart in their prose texts. Ms. 7’s prose text alone mentions Oddr’s travel to Ungaraland ‘land of the Hungarians’, which he undertakes immediately after his visit to the Holy Land (Ǫrv 1888, 119, 121). It relates that Ungaraland was ruled by two young kings, named Vilhjálmr amd Knútr, who were in dispute with one another to the extent that Knútr had to flee the kingdom. Oddr offered his support to Knútr and acted as an intermediary on his behalf with Vilhjálmr, but the latter would not accept peace terms. A battle ensued, during which Oddr killed Vilhjálmr. All parties then accepted a truce with Knútr, who became king and invited Oddr to accept hospitality with him. Oddr recites Ǫrv 134 at this point. — [All]: Ǫrv 1888, 137 and 207, Skj B and Skald all publish a text of 7’s version of this stanza as well as a text according to 343a (Ǫrv 1888, 207 follows 471). Skald also has a separate text of the first helmingr according to 471(64c). The text of 343a is as follows:
Hitta ek hugsnara hilding*a tvá
lítlu síðar, er löndum réðu.
Veitta ek öðrum vígs ofgengi
ungum jöfri arfs at kveðja.
Prose order: Ek hitta lítlu síðar tvá hugsnara hilding*a, er réðu löndum. Ek veitta öðrum ungum jöfri ofgengi vígs at kveðja arfs.
Translation: I encountered a little later two keen-minded chieftains who ruled the lands. I granted support in battle to one, to the young prince to claim [his] inheritance.
— [2] Ungara ‘of the Hungarians’: A form of this proper name probably lies behind 343a’s and 471’s hap. leg. hugsnara ‘keen-minded’ (ll. 1, 2), which is likely to be a lectio facilior. — [6]: The same line occurs in Heiðr 89/6.
