They call me Hœngr (‘Salmon’) as half [of my] name; I will offer you resistance from here. You shall certainly know, before we two part, that arrows bite farmers.

Context: Ketill identifies himself a second time. The stanza is introduced with the words: Ketill kvað ‘Ketill said’ immediately after Ket 6.
Notes: [1] Hæng ‘Hœngr ("Salmon")’: See Note to Ket 1/1. — [3-4] ek mun veita þér viðnám heðan ‘I will offer you resistance from here’: I.e. ‘standing here’: The expression veita við[r]nám ‘offer resistance’ occurs in HǫrðG Lv 8/5V (Harð 15) and in prose texts (Fritzner: viðrnám). — [7] búkörlum ‘farmers’: Ketill insults Gusi, who earlier calls himself the ruler of the noble Saami (cf. Ket 3b), by referring to him as a common farmer of low status (búkarl). — [8] örvar bíta ‘arrows bite’: The use of the verb bíta to describe the effect of a weapon on an opponent is very common in Old Norse poetry and prose (cf. LP: bíta; ONP: bíta 4).
