Anon Eirm 2I
R. D. Fulk (ed.) 2012, ‘Anonymous Poems, Eiríksmál 2’ in Diana Whaley (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 1: From Mythical Times to c. 1035. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 1. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 1007.
‘Es mér ór heimi hǫlða vánir
gǫfugra nǫkkurra, svá es mér glatt hjarta.’
‘Es mér vánir nǫkkurra gǫfugra hǫlða ór heimi, svá es hjarta mér glatt.’
‘I expect certain glorious men from the world [of the living], so my heart is glad.’
Mss: 761bˣ(105r); FskAˣ(36-37), 52ˣ(14v), 301ˣ(13r) (Fsk)
Readings: [1] mér: so FskAˣ, 52ˣ, mér corrected from ‘me’ 761bˣ, ‘me’ 301ˣ [4] hjarta: um hjarta FskAˣ
Editions: Skj AI, 175, Skj BI, 165, Skald I, 89; Fsk 1902-3, 28 (ch. 7), ÍF 29, 78 (ch. 8); Möbius 1860, 231, Gordon 1957, 148, Jón Helgason 1968, 22.
Context: As for st. 1 (Fsk).
Notes: [1-2] es mér vánir ‘I expect’: Lit. ‘[there] is to me expectations’. The sg. verb disagrees with the pl. subject vánir ‘expectations’, but such lack of concord is not uncommon in skaldic poetry, and in prose when the verb precedes its subject (NS §66 Anm. 3). Emendation to eru ‘are’ (so Árni Magnússon in 761bˣ; Möbius 1860; Ulset 1975, 41) is therefore unnecessary. — [2] hǫlða ‘men’: The meaning here is perhaps influenced by OE hæleð ‘heroes’ (Hofmann 1955, 43), though the more general meaning ‘man’ is fairly common in verse: see LP: hǫlðr. The word usually means ‘yeoman, holder of allodial land’.
