Sé ek eigi þann         í mínu liði,
þótt ek biða         ok baugum kaupa,
er muni ríða         ok rönd bera
ok þeirra Húna         herlið finna.

I do not see that one in my troop who would ride and bear a shield, and meet the war-troop of the Huns, though I should beg and bargain with rings.

Notes: [1] þann ‘that one’: The reading of both mss, þann ‘that one’, gives good sense and syntax but lacks alliteration. All eds but Heiðr 1672, FSN and ÍF Edd. emend to mann ‘a man’ (Edd. Min. moves mann to be the first word of the stanza). ÍF Edd. emends to þann mann ‘that man’. — [3, 4]: The two verbs in these lines, biða and kaupa, appear in the mss as biði and kaupi, with C14th endings of the 1st pers. pres. subj. of, respectively, biðja ‘beg, request’ and kaupa ‘bargain, buy’. These have been normalized to forms suitable to the period 1250-1300 in accordance with the procedures of the rest of this volume. — [5-6] ríða ok bera rönd ‘ride and bear a shield’: Also found in Heiðr 103/1-2 (and see Note) and Heiðr 109/5-6. — [7-8]: Skj B and Skald emend to ok þeim Húnum | herboð inna ‘and perform the war-summons to the Huns’. This seems to be partly based on Verelius’ emendation of R715ˣ’s problematic reading, Oc þeim Hunum | Herbod bioda (Heiðr 1672) ‘and offer the war-summons to the Huns’, but both mss have herlið ‘war-troop’ and 203ˣ’s reading gives good sense as it stands.
