Hróksv Hrkv 8VIII (Hálf 58)
Hubert Seelow (ed.) 2017, ‘Hálfs saga ok Hálfsrekka 58 (Hrókr inn svarti, Hrókskviða 8)’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry in fornaldarsögur. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 8. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 350.
Skyldi ekki stynja, þó at stór hlyti
sár í sóknum, siklings vinir,
né benjar sér binda láta,
fyrr en annars dags jafnlengð kæmi.
Vinir siklings skyldi ekki stynja, þó at hlyti stór sár í sóknum, né láta sér binda benjar, fyrr en jafnlengð annars dags kæmi.
The friends of the king should not moan, even if they received great wounds in combat, nor have their wounds dressed, before the same time of the following day arrived.
Mss: 2845(38r) (Hálf)
Editions: Skj AII, 266, Skj BII, 288, Skald II, 151; Hálf 1864, 33, Hálf 1909, 123, FSGJ 2, 126, Hálf 1981, 192; Edd. Min. 45.
Notes: [7-8] fyrr en jafnlengð annars dags kæmi ‘before the same time of the following day arrived’: That is, before twenty-four hours had elapsed. Presumably,
the idea was to ensure the men were toughened by bearing the pain of their
wounds before allowing them to be bound up.
