Friðþjófr ÞorsteinssonLausavísur
192021

Einn mun ek ganga         upp frá ströndu;
þarf ek lítit lið         lofða at finna.
Verpið eldi         í jöfra bæ,
ef ek eigi kem         aptr at kveldi.

Ek mun ganga einn upp frá ströndu; ek þarf lítit lið at finna lofða. Verpið eldi í bæ jöfra, ef ek kem eigi aptr at kveldi.

I will go alone up from the shore; I need little company to find the rulers. Set fire to the compound of the princes if I do not come back this evening.

Mss: 510(94v), 568ˣ(101v), 27ˣ(137r), papp17ˣ(360v), 109a IIˣ(150r), 1006ˣ(589), 173ˣ(89r) (Frið)

Readings: [1] Einn: ‘eirn’ papp17ˣ, 1006ˣ, 173ˣ    [2] upp frá ströndu: inn til bæjar papp17ˣ, 109a IIˣ, 1006ˣ, 173ˣ    [4] lofða at finna: lofðunga finna papp17ˣ, 109a IIˣ, lofðunga at finna 1006ˣ, 173ˣ    [5] Verpið: so papp17ˣ, 173ˣ, verpi þér 510, 27ˣ, ‘verpit E[…]’ 568ˣ, varpið 109a IIˣ, 1006ˣ    [6] í jöfra bæ: ‘[…]’ 568ˣ    [7] ef ek eigi kem (‘ef eg ei kemur’): so 568ˣ, 27ˣ, ef ek kem eigi 510, ef ek kem ekki papp17ˣ, 1006ˣ, 173ˣ, ef ek kom ekki 109a IIˣ

Editions: Skj AII, 275, Skj BII, 297, Skald II, 157, FF §48; Falk 1890, 79-80, Frið 1893, 23, 52, 80, Frið 1901, 34-5, Frið 1914, 23; Edd. Min. 101.

Context: Friðþjófr and his men learn that Helgi and Hálfdan and their entourage are at Baldrshagi engaged in sacrifice to the dísir (at dísablóti, so the B text; A text has ok blótuðu ‘and they were sacrificing’). Friðþjófr decides to enter the sanctuary alone, and tells his men to keep watch, speaking this stanza.

Notes: [2] upp frá ströndu ‘up from the shore’: The B text has inn til bæjar ‘[I will go] in to the compound’. — [3] ek þarf lítit lið ‘I need little company’: A litotes, meaning ‘I need no company’. Or ‘I need little help’. There is probably a play here on the two meanings of lið ‘people, company’ and ‘help’.
