text and translation

Snarla skaut ór sóti
— sveyk of hús ok reykir
stóðu stopðir síðan —
steinóðr logi glóðum.

Steinóðr logi skaut snarla glóðum ór sóti, ok stopðir reykir stóðu síðan of sveyk hús.

‘The furious flame quickly shot embers from the soot, and straight columns of smoke then rose above tottering houses.

notes and context

Logi ‘flame, blaze’ is given in Skm as a heiti for ‘fire’.

Sigfús Blöndal (1978, 92-3) suggests that this st. describes the destruction of the imperial Byzantine Treasury after the revolt against Emperor Michael V on 21 April 1042. That can, however, not be ascertained.
