text and translation

Auðkendar verr auði
auð-Týr boga nauðir;
þars auðviðum auðit
auðs í gulli rauðu.
Heiðmǫnnum býr heiðis
heiðmildr jǫfurr reiðir;
venr heiðfrǫmuðr heiðar
heiðgjǫf vala leiðar.

{Auð-Týr} verr {auðkendar nauðir boga} auði; þars {auðviðum} auðit auðs í rauðu gulli. Heiðmildr jǫfurr býr {reiðir heiðis} heiðmǫnnum; {heiðfrǫmuðr} venr {heiðar leiðar vala} heiðgjǫf.

‘The wealth-Týr <god> [MAN] wraps readily recognised compellers of the bow [ARMS] with wealth; there wealth is allotted to wealth-trees [MEN] in red gold. The payment-liberal prince adorns chariots of the hawk [ARMS] of paid men; the payment-advancer [GENEROUS MAN] accustoms bright paths of falcons [ARMS] to the honour-gift.

notes and context

As st. 47 above, except that the aðalhendingar extend throughout each helmingr and not only throughout the couplets. The variant is called klifat ‘repeated’.

For this rhyme variant, see SnE 2007, 80-1. — The heading in is 40. — [1-4]: This helmingr plays on the different meanings of the homonyms auðr ‘wealth’ and the prefix auð- ‘readily, easily’. — [5-8]: The near-homonyms in this helmingr are heiðr ‘payment, gift’, heiðir ‘hawk’ and heiðr ‘bright’. For the meaning of heið- ‘payment’, see Konráð Gíslason (1895-7) and NN §1508D.
