{Sviftir {Lista linna}} framdi enn oft saung til lofs við {höll Krist} — svá höfum frá spurt —, því að {{fjarðar blik}bjóðr} saung fagrar tíðir með ástúð hvern dag þeirri brúði, er fremst er.

{The hurler {of the Lista of snakes}} [GOLD > GENEROUS MAN] still often performed a song in praise of {the hall of Christ} [= Mary] — so we [I] have heard tell —, because {the giver {of the gleam of the fjord}} [(lit. ‘gleam-giver of the fjord’) GOLD > GENEROUS MAN] sang beautiful services with love each day, for the bride who is the most outstanding.

Notes: [4] Lista (Listi, m. nom.): Lista, name of a district in Southern Norway, here used as a heiti for ‘land’ in a gold-kenning of the type ‘lair of the snake’ (Meissner, 237). — [4] Krist ‘Christ’s’: Both here and at 26/6 the gen. of Kristr occurs without the -s suffix (cf. ANG §358.2, Anm. 3). Emendation is unnecessary, though Jón Helgason emended to Krists in both locations. The kenning höll Krists ‘hall of Christ’ for the Virgin Mary belongs to a type which compares the Virgin to a building, referring to her as the temple of Solomon and the Church itself. See Note to Gamlkan Has 60/5-8. — [7] fjarðar ‘fjord’: Jón Helgason suggested emending the reading of 721 and all the transcripts, fira ‘of men’, to fjarðar which makes more sense as the determinant of a gold-kenning, but destroys the hending. It is likely that the text is corrupt here.
