{Battle-brave elm {of the din-shower of weapons}} [BATTLE > WARRIOR], our boldness of heart must not diminish in the land; thus {the linden of linen} [WOMAN] commanded.

Context: As st. 2 above. The tree-name that functions as the base-word in the woman-kenning is lind ‘linden’.
Notes: [3] í landi ‘in the land’: Kock (NN §1836) argues that this prepositional phrase ought to belong to the second rather than to the first clause (‘thus the linden of linen [WOMAN] in the land commanded’), and that ‘in the land’ means ‘at home’. That word order is entirely possible, although land does not appear to be attested in this meaning (see Fritzner: land). SnE 1848-87, I, offers in patria degens ‘living in the homeland’. The present edn follows Skj B and SnE 1998.
