Fugla heiti — Þul FuglaIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Fugla heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 951. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3241> (accessed 26 April 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Fugla) enumerates various
heiti for ‘birds’, and it is recorded in ms. A of
Skm (
SnE). Ms. B contains only the heading,
Fugla heiti ‘Names for birds’ (which is illegible in A), and the first four lines of stanza 1 (the ms. breaks off after
hel- in
helsingr). This is the last list of
heiti in the
þulur-sequence in B. A noticeable feature found in most stanzas of this
þula is the arrangement of
heiti according to a formal criterion, namely, alliteration (cf. the similar arrangement of
heiti in
Þul Skipa sts 5, 6/1-4, 7, 9,
Þul Eyja st. 2, etc.). Kock (
NN §
3140) calls attention to the fact that certain lines in this
þula are hypermetrical, perhaps owing to later additions of new
heiti. In both mss,
Þul Fugla is preceded by
Þul Ara and it is followed by
Þul Kvenna II in ms. A. There is no list of
heiti for ‘birds’ in
LaufE (
LaufE 1979, 268:
fugla heiti vantar ‘names for birds are missing’), but many of the
heiti from the present
þula are recorded in RE 1665(Ff) along with
heiti that are not in the
þula. There can be no doubt that the list was taken from a ms. related to A (or to A and B), but the spelling of the
heiti is in most cases so garbled that RE 1665 is of little value for the reconstruction of obscure forms.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
