Heiti for islands — Þul IslandsIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Heiti for islands’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 994. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=2987> (accessed 26 April 2024)
This anonymous stanza (
Þul Islands) in
dróttkvætt metre, which mostly contains names of Norwegian islands, is recorded only in ms. A of
Skm (
SnE), where it is included in the final section of the sequence of
þulur composed in
fornyrðislag. It is preceded by the
dróttkvætt Þul Women and followed by the
þulur-like stanzas composed by
Einarr Skúlason (see
ESk Lv 8-9), in which the skald produces variations on the sea-kenning pattern ‘island’s belt’ which illustrate
heiti for ‘islands’ in skaldic usage (see
SnE 1848-87,
II, 491-2, as well as
LaufE 1979, 267, 342-3 and RE 1665(Ee3))
. These stanzas are followed by the most extensive
þula of island-names,
Þul Eyja sts 1-7, in regular
þulur-metre (
fornyrðislag). Thus the stanza below is the first in the sequence of stanzas listing
heiti for ‘islands’ in
Skm. The heading is
eyja heiti ‘names of islands’ written in red ink.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
