Sterkum stilli styrjar væni.
Sterkum stilli … væni styrjar.
‘For the strong ruler … an expectation of battle.’
Cited as an example of parhomoeon (‘paranomeon’), a figure in which several words have the same initial letter (mǫrg orð hafa einn upphafs-staf; TGT 1927, 69); in other words, alliteration (TGT 1927, 70). Óláfr adds after the stanza, ok er hon upphaf til kveðandi þeirar, er saman heldr nórœnum skáldskap svá sem naglar halda skipi saman ‘and [this figure] is the origin of that poetic device which holds together Norse poetry just as nails hold a ship together’.
Alliteration here falls on the consonant cluster st-.
