Anon (TGT) 24III
Tarrin Wills (ed.) 2017, ‘Anonymous Lausavísur, Stanzas from the Third Grammatical Treatise 24’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 553.
Sterkum stilli styrjar væni.
Sterkum stilli … væni styrjar.
For the strong ruler … an expectation of battle.

Editions: Skj AI, 599, Skj BI, 599, Skald I, 292; SnE 1818, 324, SnE 1848, 192, SnE 1848-87, II, 148-9, 419, TGT 1884, 24, 96, 208, TGT 1927, 69, 103.
Context: Cited as an example of parhomoeon (‘paranomeon’), a figure in which several words have the same initial letter (mǫrg orð hafa einn upphafs-staf; TGT 1927, 69); in other words, alliteration (TGT 1927, 70). Óláfr adds after the stanza, ok er hon upphaf til kveðandi þeirar, er saman heldr nórœnum skáldskap svá sem naglar halda skipi saman ‘and [this figure] is the origin of that poetic device which holds together Norse poetry just as nails hold a ship together’.
Notes: [All]: Alliteration here falls on the consonant cluster st-.
