Skaut vínfars
vísa mönnum
á gómsker
gyltu borði,
hilmis hirð
en hunangsbára
í geðknörr
glymjandi fell.
Skaut gyltu borði {vínfars} á {gómsker} mönnum vísa, en {hunangsbára} fell glymjandi í {geðknörr} hirð hilmis.
The gilded rim {of the wine-vessel} [CUP] thrust against {the gum-skerries} [TEETH] of the leader’s men, and {the honey-wave} [MEAD] fell foaming into {the mind-ship} [BREAST] of the ruler’s retinue.

Context: As st. 28 above.
Notes: [1] skaut ‘thrust’: Used impersonally with gyltu borði vínfars ‘the gilded rim of the wine-vessel’ i.e. ‘cup’ (ll. 1, 4) as the dat. object. — [1] vínfars ‘of the wine-vessel [CUP]’: So Flat. Vistfars ‘of the food-vessel’ i.e. ‘of the plate’ (so E, F, 81a) makes little sense in the context. — [3] gómsker ‘the gum-skerries’: For a similar kenning, see VSt Erf 1/3III. — [8] glymjandi (f. nom. sg.) ‘foaming’: So F, Flat. Glymjanda (so E) is ungrammatical (n. or m. sg. oblique, and the pres. part. qualifies -bára f. nom. sg. ‘-wave’).
