Hróksv Hrkv 19VIII (Hálf 69)
Hubert Seelow (ed.) 2017, ‘Hálfs saga ok Hálfsrekka 69 (Hrókr inn svarti, Hrókskviða 19)’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry in fornaldarsögur. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 8. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 358.
Slíkt kennir mér at sofa lítit
marga grímu ok mjök vaka:
er bróðir minn brenna skyldi
kvikr í eldi með konungs rekkum.
Slíkt kennir mér at sofa lítit marga grímu ok vaka mjök: er bróðir minn skyldi brenna kvikr í eldi með rekkum konungs.
This causes me to sleep little many a night and wake much: that my brother should burn alive in the fire with the king’s champions.
Mss: 2845(38v) (Hálf)
Editions: Skj AII, 267, Skj BII, 290, Skald II, 152; Hálf 1864, 37, Hálf 1909, 128, FSGJ 2, 129, Hálf 1981, 195; Edd. Min. 47.
Notes: [All]: With
this stanza Hrókr begins to express his feelings of grief for the loss of his
brother and his king, and his desire to take vengeance for their deaths. — [1-2]: Similar phrasing in MBerf Lv 3/5, 8II is attributed to a
man’s desire for a woman. — [3] marga grímu ‘many a night’: The noun gríma ‘mask, cowl’ has the transferred sense of ‘night’ in poetry; cf. Þul Dœgra 1/5III and Note there; also Heiðr 22/4.
