Óxum báðir         á Berurjóðri,
Ásmundr ok ek,         upp í bernsku.
Skófum skeyti,         skip smíðuðum,
gerðum örvar         okkr at gamni.

Óxum upp báðir í bernsku á Berurjóðri, Ásmundr ok ek. Skófum skeyti, smíðuðum skip, gerðum örvar okkr at gamni.

We both grew up in [our] childhood at Berurjóðr, Ásmundr and I. We shaved shafts, built ships, made arrows to amuse ourselves.

Mss: 343a(80v), 471(94r), 173ˣ(60vb-61ra) (Ǫrv)

Readings: [1] Óxum (‘Voxum’): ‘Wxum’ 471    [7] gerðum: gerðum vit 173ˣ

Editions: Skj AII, 306, Skj BII, 325, Skald II, 173; Ǫrv 1888, 198, FSGJ 2, 341.

Notes: [1-4]: Compare similar sentiments expressed in Ǫrv 55/1-4 and Ǫrv 63b/1-2. — [3] Ásmundr: Name of the son of farmer Ingjaldr, Oddr’s playmate and later foster-brother. — [5-7]: The activities listed in these lines are reminiscent of Vsp 7/5-8 (the gods’ first activities on Iðavǫllr) and 35/3-12 (the youthful tasks of Jarl). — [8] okkr at gamni ‘to amuse ourselves’: Lit. ‘for amusement for ourselves’. Skj B and Skald alter the mss’ word order to at gamni okkr, although ll. 7-8 are metrically regular.
