text and translation

Veizt eigi þú,         — vesöl ertu mála,
fullfeikn kona —         hví þú fagna skalt.
Sjá mun Tyrfingr,         ef þú trúa mættir,
ætt þinni, mær,         allri spilla.

Þú veizt eigi, hví þú skalt fagna; ertu vesöl mála, fullfeikn kona. Sjá Tyrfingr mun spilla allri ætt þinni, mær, ef þú mættir trúa.

‘You do not know why you must rejoice; you are wretched in your utterances, destructive woman. That Tyrfingr will destroy all your family, girl, if you are able to believe it.

notes and context

[5-8]: Missing from Hb through damage to the fol. The text is supplied from the other mss and repeats ll. 5-8 of Angantýr Lv 4 (Heiðr 34) (see Note). The fact that the final word of the stanza is present in Hb and reads skal ‘shall, must’ (1st/3rd pers. sg. pres.) suggests that these lines were not the original ending to the stanza.
