StarkSt Vík 19VIII (Gautr 27)
Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.) 2017, ‘Gautreks saga 27 (Starkaðr gamli Stórvirksson, Víkarsbálkr 19)’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry in fornaldarsögur. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 8. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 272.
Var sínkgjarn sagðr af gulli
Neri jarl, nýtr í ráðum,
Víkars sonr vanr í sóknum;
sá réð einn Upplendingum.
Neri jarl var sagðr sínkgjarn af gulli, nýtr í ráðum, sonr Víkars vanr í sóknum; sá réð einn Upplendingum.
Jarl Neri was said to be covetous of gold, capable in counsels, Víkarr’s son, accustomed to fight; he ruled alone over the Upplendingar.
Mss: 590b-cˣ(4v) (Gautr)
Readings: [7] einn: ‘eirn’ 590b‑cˣ
Editions: Skj AII, 329, Skj BII, 349, Skald II, 188; FSN 3, 26, Gautr 1900, 23, FSGJ 4, 23; Edd. Min. 41.
Notes: [1] sínkgjarn ‘covetous’: The adj. is more commonly simplified as síngjarn (see Fritzner: síngjarn), but the sole ms. of this stanza spells it sínk-, a spelling reflected in the prose text (sínkr). On the etymology, see AEW: sínka. Some eds (Skj B; Skald) use the form síngjarn here. — [7] einn ‘alone’: All eds have emended the
ms.’s ‘eirn’, which is not an Old Norse word. — [8] Upplendingum ‘over the Upplendingar’: The Upplendingar,
people from Opplandene (ON Upplǫnd), Norway, the region which Víkarr’s
opponents, Herþjófr and his brothers, are said to have ruled.
