Stjóri vensk at stœra
stór verk dunu geira;
halda kann með hildi
hjaldr-Týr und sik foldu.
Harri slítr í hverri
Hjarranda fǫt snerru;
falla þar til fyllar
fjallvargs jǫru þollar.

{Stjóri {dunu geira}} vensk at stœra stór verk; {hjaldr-Týr} kann halda foldu und sik með hildi. Harri slítr {fǫt Hjarranda} í hverri snerru; {þollar jǫru} falla þar til fyllar fjallvargs.

{The commander {of the din of spears}} [BATTLE > WARRIOR] accustoms himself to magnifying great deeds; {the battle-Týr <god>} [WARRIOR] can subjugate the land with battle. The lord rips {the garments of Hjarrandi <= Óðinn>} [BYRNIES] in every attack; {fir-trees of battle} [WARRIORS] fall there as the fill of the mountain-wolf.

Mss: R(50r), Tˣ(52r), W(146), U(54v) (SnE)

Readings: [3] kann: so W, U, tann R, Tˣ    [5] slítr í: skilr und U    [7] þar: þá U    [8] fjall‑: fall U

Editions: Skj AII, 66, Skj BII, 75, Skald II, 42, NN §2182; SnE 1848-87, I, 666-7, II, 394, III, 124, SnE 1879-81, I, 9, 80, II, 21, SnE 1931, 238, SnE 2007, 24; Konráð Gíslason 1895-7, I, 31-2.

Context: Like st. 41 above, this variant is called liðhendur ‘helping-rhymes’. In this case, however, the even lines contain skothending and the first hending in each odd line, which is fixed in position 1, forms aðalhending with the first rhyme in the following even line.

Notes: [All]: The heading in is 45. — [All]: For this variant, see NN §2182 and Sievers (1893, 108). — [3, 4] halda foldu und sik ‘subjugate the land’: Lit. ‘keep the land beneath himself’. — [3] kann ‘can’: So W, U. Ms. R reads ‘taɴ’ (the first letter is <t> and not <c>), but it looks as though an attempt has been made at a correction to ‘kaɴ’ or ‘haɴ’. — [6] Hjarranda ‘of Hjarrandi <= Óðinn>’: Hjarrandi is a heiti for Óðinn and also the name of a legendary king, the father of Heðinn (see SnE 1998, I, 72-3 and st. 49/5 above). See also Note to Þul Óðins 4/5. — [8] fjallvargs ‘of the mountain-wolf’: Fjallvargr is a hap. leg., and Snorri must have added the first element of the cpd (fjall-) to provide the necessary rhyme and alliteration.
