Sjórs Lv 1II
Kari Ellen Gade (ed.) 2009, ‘Sigurðr jórsalafari Magnússon, Lausavísur 1’ in Kari Ellen Gade (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 2: From c. 1035 to c. 1300. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 2. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 467.
The couplet (Sjórs Lv 1) is preserved only in Ágr (Ágr).
Búendr þykkja mér baztir;
byggt land ok friðr standi.
Búendr þykkja mér baztir; standi byggt land ok friðr.
The farmers seem to me the best; may the populated land and the peace endure.

Editions: Skj AI, 454, Skj BI, 422, Skald I, 209; ÍF 29, 50 (ch. 55), Ágr 1995, 74-5 (ch. 56).
Context: Sigurðr expresses his affection for his subjects with this couplet.
Notes: [All]: In Skj B, Finnur Jónsson appears to include byggt land ‘the populated land’ (l. 2) in the first cl. and in apposition to búendr ‘the farmers (l. 1). He translates the couplet as follows: Bønderne tykkes mig de bedste, det befolkede land og at freden består ‘The farmers seem to me the best, the populated land and that the peace endures’. In the present edn, standi ‘may endure’ (l. 2) is taken as 3rd pers. pl. pret. subj. with the subjects byggt land ‘the populated land’ and friðr ‘the peace’ (both l. 2).
