text and translation

Auðgint mjög, því að Éva trúði,
át hon blóm, en tapaði sóma,
og þar með sier Ádám teygði;
át hann nú það, er vissi bannað.
Ugði hann, að Éva stygðiz,
ef neitaði bæn að veita;
fjandinn gat svá í fyrstu blindað
feðgin vár með nógu dári.

Éva, mjög auðgint, því að trúði, át blóm, en hon tapaði sóma og teygði Ádám þar með sier; hann át nú það, er vissi bannað. Hann ugði, að Éva stygðiz, ef neitaði að veita bæn; svá gat fjandinn í fyrstu blindað feðgin vár með nógu dári.

‘Eve, very easily beguiled because she trusted, ate the fruit, but she lost honour and enticed Adam there with her; now he ate that which he knew was banned. He feared that Eve would be offended if he refused to grant her request; thus the fiend in the beginning managed to blind our parents with much deceit.

notes and context

See Note on st. 15. — [5-6]: Cf. Stjórn: hann ugdi at hon mundi stygguaz uidr. ef hann æti eigi eplit er hon bar honum ‘he feared that she would be deeply offended if he did not eat the apple she brought to him’ (Unger 1862, 38). Schottmann (1973, 199) believes that the language here is so similar that the Lil poet must have used Stjórn as a source.
