Síðan bjó konungur ferð sína og sótti út eftir dölunum. Hann tók sér náttból og kom þar þá saman allt lið hans og lágu um nóttina úti undir skjöldum sínum.

En þegar er lýsti bjó konungur herinn, fluttist þá enn út eftir dalnum er þeir voru að því búnir. Þá komu til konungs bændur mjög margir og gengu flestir í lið með honum og kunnu allir eitt að segja að lendir menn höfðu saman dregið her óvígjan og þeir ætluðu bardaga að halda við konung.

Þá tók konungur margar merkur silfurs og fékk í hendur einum búanda og mælti síðan: "Fé þetta skaltu varðveita og skipta síðan, leggja sumt til kirkna en sumt gefa kennimönnum, sumt ölmusumönnum og gefa fyrir líf og sál þeirra manna er falla í orustu og berjast í móti oss."

Bóndi svarar: "Skal fé þetta gefa til sálubótar yðrum mönnum konungur?"

Þá svarar konungur: "Þetta fé skal gefa fyrir sál þeirra manna er með bóndum eru í orustu og falla fyrir vopnum vorra manna. En þeir menn er oss fylgja í orustu og þar falla, þá munum vér bjargast að allir saman."
