Valdimar Danakonungur hafði þá spurt þau tíðindi af Noregi að þar var þá Magnús einn konungur, þá var eytt flokkum öllum öðrum þar í landi. Þá sendi konungur menn sína með bréfum til Magnúss konungs og þeirra Erlings, minnti þá á einkamál þau er Erlingur hafði bundið við Valdimar konung, svo sem hér var fyrr ritað, að Valdimar konungur skyldi eignast Víkina austan til Rýgjarbits ef Magnús yrði einvaldskonungur í Noregi.

En er sendimenn komu fram og sýndu Erlingi bréf Danakonungs og hann skilur tilkall það er Danakonungur hefir í Noreg þá bar Erlingur þetta fyrir aðra menn, þá er hann skaut ráðum til, en þeir sögðu allir einn að aldrei skyldi Dönum miðla af Noregi því að menn sögðu að sú öld hefði verst verið þar í landi er Danir höfðu vald yfir Noregi. Sendimenn Danakonungs töluðu sitt mál fyrir Erlingi og beiddu hann úrskurðar. Erlingur bað þá fara með sér í Vík austur um haustið, sagði að hann mundi þá veita úrskurð er hann hefði hitta þá menn í Víkinni er vitrastir voru.
