Heiti á hendi — Þul á hendiIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Heiti á hendi’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 967. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3245> (accessed 27 April 2024)
This
þula (
Þul á hendi) is recorded only in ms. A of
Skm (
SnE). Neither its heading,
Heiti á hendi (‘heiti ahen(di)’) ‘Names for parts of the hand’ (as usual in A, written in red ink), nor the introduction (
Heiti eru handar ‘The names of the hand are’, l. 1), reflect the actual content of this
þula, where various terms for ‘hand’ proper are not separated from the words that denote parts of the hand. The two entities are listed separately in the prose section enumerating body parts in
Skm both in the A redaction (
SnE 1848-87,
II, 467) and in the R redaction (cf.
SnE 1998,
I, 108):
Hǫnd má kalla mund, arm, lám, hramm.
Á hendi heitir *alnbogi … ‘An upper limb is called hand, arm, paw, paw. Parts of the upper limb are called elbow …’ (see also
Faulkes 1987, 154). Less than half of the names for ‘hand’ enumerated in the
þula are also recorded in this section of
SnE, but that prose list contains more
heiti for parts of the hand than the stanza below. In ms. A,
Þul á hendi is preceded by
Þul Grýlu and followed by
Þul Valkyrja. The
þula is not recorded in
LaufE or RE 1665.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
