Poem about Haraldr harðráði — Grani HarII

Grani skáld

Kari Ellen Gade 2009, ‘ Grani skáld, Poem about Haraldr harðráði’ in Kari Ellen Gade (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 2: From c. 1035 to c. 1300. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 2. Turnhout: Brepols, pp. 296-9. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=1212> (accessed 26 April 2024)

These two sts about Haraldr harðráði’s campaign in Denmark (Grani Har) are attributed to Grani (‘Grani skáld’) in all the prose texts. Nothing else remains of Grani’s poetic oeuvre except a couplet in SnE. Although earlier eds assign this to the poem about Haraldr, it is too incomplete to support that attribution (but see Fidjestøl 1982, 143), and it has been edited separately in SkP III (see Grani FragIII). Both sts from Har are transmitted in Mork (Mork) and H, Hr (H-Hr). Stanza 1 is also recorded in mss , 39, F, E, J2ˣ of Hkr and in FskAˣ (Fsk). Lines from st. 2 are found in mss R (ll. 1-2), (ll. 1-2), U (ll. 1-2), A (ll. 1-4), B (ll. 1-4) and C (ll. 1-2) of SnE (Skm). Because both sts are transmitted in Mork, it has been chosen as the main ms. The H-Hr text of st. 1 follows Hkr rather than Mork.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
