Tígnar birtiz maðr af magni,
menn sé gjǫrr ef nǫkkurr kennir,
klæðin hefir sá ilsku eyðir
ǫll ok prúð, með byskups skrúði;
happreyni gaf hjálpar-kænum,
hann græðir sár krankra manna,
sína blessan; svá varð raunar
svefn at vitran byskups-efni.

Vélrýrir tók vígslu dýra,
vagna bóls, með helgum stóli,
sínum framdi siklingr mána
seima skipti andar giptum;
tírprúður lét trúarsæði
tungla hválfs í munar kálfum
gǫfgri ferð, þar er gætti hjarðar
gæfu studdr, af vexti frævaz.

Augun gaf, sá er engi mýgir
alt ok þiggr, þótt niðri liggi,
byskup sæll, með birti fullri
brennanda ljós, hestum tvennum;
veittu, Kristr! at sjáim vér settan
slíkan mann í vígðu ranni,
fagna mundi flest en gegna
ferðin þín, með glæstu skríni.

Sóttir græðir allra átta
uppi ok niðri ok þess í miðju,
bót fær hverr er byskup ítran
beiðir þess, er samir greiða;
ǫllum bergr sá er eyðir villu
ormbóls hǫtuðr fegri sólu;
lúti gjǫrvǫll landsbygð sætum
lim stýranda bjartra himna.

Ilmar slíkt um allan hólmann,
Ormr byskup veldr þeiri forman,
beiðiz hann með bjǫrtum kvæðum
byskups heiðr at víða reiðiz;
verðr Guðmundur efri jǫrðu
elsku Baldr ef þyrma valdi,
drottinn efli hann mildr ok máttugr
mána hjarls til slíkrar vánar.

Svelgdiz ormr með vatni vǫrmu,
varð hann innan brjósts, leiknum svanna;
síðan fekk hon sótt með æði,
sútum grét þat móðir þrútin;
henni birtiz heilagr kennir
hófs sýnandi snák í lófa,
eyðir þorðit yfir at ráða
jarðar hring, þar er merkt var fingri.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
