Some editors, especially those working with Christian skaldic poetry, will need to refer to the Bible. The following advice has been provided by Martin Chase.

It is important to use the standard Latin edition of the Vulgate and not a modernised text, in order to approximate as closely as possible to the medieval Bible. The preferred edition is the Stuttgart Vulgate:

Biblia Sacra iuxta Vulgatam adiuvantibus Bonifatio Fischer OSB, Iohanne Gribomont OSB, H. F. D. Sparks, W. Thiele recensuit et brevi apparatu instruxit Robertus Weber OSB editio tertia emendata quam paravit Bonifatius Fischer OSB, editio minor Deutsche Bibelgeselleschaft Stuttgart, dritte verbesserte Auflage, 1984. (The editions of 1969 and 1983 are also acceptable).

This edition of the Vulgate will appear as an abbreviated reference, designated Vulg.

This edition is available in print or on certain web sites, which (confusingly) do not usually mention the particular edition they have put up. The Stuttgart Vulgate is, however, instantly recognisable by its format: it has no punctuation. The version to avoid is the Nova Vulgata, which the Vatican web site features. This is a significantly altered version designed to be read aloud in church. Versions prior to that of 1969 have similarly been revised to make the Latin conform to classical ideals.

The following web sites allow you to access the Stuttgart Vulgate text:

1. Bible Study Tools (has both the Vulgate and Douay-Rheims): <http://www.biblestudytools.net>

2. Westminster Bible Gateway: Vulgate: <http://www.wts.edu/biblegateway.html>

3. Library of Congress: Vulgate: <http://lcweb.loc.gov/global/classics/clastexts.html>

If you quote from the Vulgate, you should also provide an English translation, either of your own, or from a standard English translation, of which the most accessible is the Richard Challoner revision of the Douay-Rheims edition, which is also readily available on the web:

The Holy Bible Translated from the Latin Vulgat: Diligently compared With the Hebrew, Greek, and other Editions in divers Languages. And first published by The English College at Doway, Anno 1609. Newly revised, and corrected, according to the Clementin Edition of the Scriptures. With Annotations for clearing up the principal Difficulties of Holy Writ. 1750. 4 vols.

The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Translated out of the Latin Vulgat: Diligently compared with the original Greek. And first published by the English College of Rhemes, anno 1582. Newly revised, and corrected according to the Clementin Edition of the Scriptures. With Annotations For clearing up modern Controversies in Religion, and other Difficulties of Holy Writ. 1752. 2 vols.

References to the Bible text should follow the format <abbreviated title>_<Book no. in roman capitals>.<chapter no. in arabic>. Examples are: Gen. I.1; John X.24; 1 Tim V.3. Books, chapters and psalm numbers should follow the Vulgate numbering.

A list of standard English abbreviations for the names of books of the Bible may be found in Hart’s Rules for Compositors and Readers at the University Press Oxford. 39th edn. or later reprint. Oxford: Oxford University Press, p. 5. This list can also be accessed on the project’s web site.
