Flokkr tók enn, sá er ekki,
ógnmildr, friðaz vildi,
ept dólgstríði dauðan
dáðfinginn höfðingja.
Knútr réð bág at brjóta
böðhraustr við gram traustan
geystr, þvít Gautar fýstu
geðbráðir landráða.

Ógnmildr flokkr, sá er ekki vildi friðaz, tók enn dáðfinginn höfðingja ept {dauðan dólgstríði}. Böðhraustr Knútr réð geystr at brjóta bág við traustan gram, þvít geðbráðir Gautar fýstu landráða.

The terror-generous troop, which would not be pacified, again appointed a deed-ready chieftain to succeed {the dead enemy-combatant} [WARRIOR = Sigurðr]. Battle-brave Knútr decided, vehement, to oppose the reliable ruler because the impetuous Gautar urged treason.

Context: After the death of Sigurðr ribbungr in July 1226, his men went to Götaland to the lawman Áskell Magnússon and his wife, Kristín, to ask Kristín’s son, Knútr, to become their new leader. With a contingent from Götaland, Knútr returned to Romerike in Norway and was elected king.

Notes: [All]: For Sigurðr ribbungr, see Note to Sturl Hákkv 7/8. — [1] flokkr (m. nom. sg.) ‘troop’: The emendation, which is in keeping with earlier eds, is necessary to furnish the subject of the cl. (flokk, so all mss, is acc.). — [5] Knútr: The son of Jarl Hákon galinn ‘the Crazy’ Fólkviðarson and Kristín Nikulássdóttir. His paternal grandmother was Cécilía, the half-sister of Sverrir Sigurðarson (Hákon Hákonarson’s grandfather). After Hákon galinn’s death, Kristín married Áskell Magnússon, lawman in Västgötaland and the eldest brother of Jarl Birgir Magnússon. See also Note to Máni Lv 4/1, 2IV.
