Haraldsdrápa I — ESk Hardr III

Einarr Skúlason

Kari Ellen Gade 2009, ‘ Einarr Skúlason, Haraldsdrápa I’ in Kari Ellen Gade (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 2: From c. 1035 to c. 1300. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 2. Turnhout: Brepols, pp. 542-4. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=1145> (accessed 27 April 2024)

These two sts, Haraldsdrápa IDrápa about Haraldr’ (ESk Hardr I), commemorate two otherwise unknown battles which Haraldr gilli(-kristr) ‘Servant (of Christ)’ fought in Denmark (see also Hardr II, 4-5). The sts are recorded in full only in Mork (Mork), and Mork is the main ms. The first helmingar of both sts are also cited in MbHgHkr (, F, E, J2ˣ, 42ˣ) and in H-Hr (H, Hr) as well as in Fsk (FskBˣ, FskAˣ). Because FskBˣ is defective, 51ˣ (AM 51 folˣ) has been consulted selectively. H-Hr gives 1/1-4 and 2/1-4 as one st. The sts are attributed to Einarr in all versions, but the name of the poem is not transmitted in any medieval source. The Mork redaction, unlike Hkr, Fsk, and H-Hr, contains no direct forms of address to Haraldr in the poetic text. See Notes to the individual sts below.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
