Anon Mgr 13VII/5 — mátta ‘could’

‘Lausnara sjálfan lofts og himna
leit eg vísliga bera til píslar
hjálpar sier á herðum stólpa
hölda trie, það er Júðar völdu.
Lietta eg honum, sem mest eg mátta;
mundum tók eg krossinn undir;
helgum guði var eg fús að fylgja
fram mínum til staðarins pínu.

‘Eg leit vísliga lausnara lofts og himna sjálfan bera stólpa hjálpar á herðum sier til píslar, trie hölda, það er Júðar völdu. Eg lietta honum, sem eg mátta mest; eg tók undir krossinn mundum; eg var fús að fylgja helgum guði mínum fram til staðarins pínu.

‘I certainly saw the redeemer of the air and the heavens [= Christ] himself carry the pillar of salvation [CROSS] on his shoulders to the torment, the tree of men [CROSS], which the Jews selected. I relieved him as best I could; I grasped beneath the Cross with my hands; I was eager to follow my holy God forward to the place of torture.
