ǪrvOdd Ævdr 47VIII (Ǫrv 117)/1 — Váru ‘were’

Váru vit Hjálmarr         hvert dægr glaðir,
meðan herskipum         heilir réðum,
unz í Sámseyju         seggi fundum,
þá er benlogum         bregða kunnu.

Váru vit Hjálmarr glaðir hvert dægr, meðan réðum herskipum heilir, unz fundum seggi í Sámseyju, þá er kunnu bregða benlogum.

Hjálmarr and I were happy every day while, unscathed, we steered our warships, until we came upon men on Samsø who knew how to brandish wound-flames [SWORDS].
