Hróksv Hrkv 10VIII (Hálf 60)
Hubert Seelow (ed.) 2017, ‘Hálfs saga ok Hálfsrekka 60 (Hrókr inn svarti, Hrókskviða 10)’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry in fornaldarsögur. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 8. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 352.
Váru ekki svá margir menn á skeiðum,
at vér á flótta fyrri* heldim,
þó at miklu lið minna hefðim,
svá at ellifu einum gegndi.
Váru ekki svá margir menn á skeiðum, at vér heldim á flótta fyrri*, þó at hefðim miklu minna lið, svá at ellifu gegndi einum.
There were not so many men on the warships that we would take to flight earlier, although we had a much smaller host, so that eleven encountered one.
Mss: 2845(38r) (Hálf)
Readings: [4] fyrri*: fyrir 2845 [5] miklu: mikla 2845
Editions: Skj AII, 266, Skj BII, 288, Skald II, 151; Hálf 1864, 34, Hálf 1909, 123-4, FSGJ 2, 126-7, Hálf 1981, 133, 192-3; Edd. Min. 45.
Notes: [All]: According to the prose text (Hálf 1981, ch. 5, 178, l. 36), Hálfr never had more than sixty men on board his ship. — [4] fyrri* ‘earlier’: The ms. has fyrir but this produces a hypometrical line; emending to fyrri ‘earlier’, as has been done by most earlier eds (Edd. Min.; Skj B; Skald), gives the required long-stemmed disyllabic word in metrical positions 1-2. — [4, 6] heldim … hefðim ‘would take … had’: Normalised to the pret. subj. forms where the ms., following C14th Icelandic practice, has generalised the indic. endings (cf. ANG §536.2; Björn K. Þórólfsson 1925, 54-6). — [5] miklu ‘much’: Lit. ‘by much’. The ms. has mikla, which gives no sense. See Fritzner: mikill 3 for the usage of miklu with a comp. adj.
