Innsteinn Innkv 5VIII (Hálf 22)

Hubert Seelow (ed.) 2017, ‘Hálfs saga ok Hálfsrekka 22 (Innsteinn Gunnlaðarson, Innsteinskviða 5)’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry in fornaldarsögur. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 8. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 322.

Enn dreymði mik         öðru sinni;
hugða ek á öxlum         elda brenna.
Gruna tek ek nökkut,         at þat gott viti;
hvat kveðr þú, þengill,         þann draum vita?

Enn dreymði mik öðru sinni; ek hugða elda brenna á öxlum. Ek tek gruna nökkut, at þat viti gott; hvat kveðr þú, þengill, þann draum vita?

I dreamed again a second time; I thought fires were burning on the shoulders [of our men]. I am becoming rather doubtful that this is a good omen; what do you say, king, that dream means?

Mss: 2845(36r) (Hálf)

Readings: [7] kveðr: ‘kuad’ 2845    [8] þann: om. 2845

Editions: Skj AII, 260, Skj BII, 280, Skald II, 147; Hálf 1864, 19, Hálf 1909, 103-4, FSGJ 2, 111-12, Hálf 1981, 181; Edd. Min. 34.

Context: This stanza is introduced by the words: Innsteinn kvað ‘Innsteinn said’.

Notes: [3] á öxlum ‘on the shoulders [of our men]’: Finnur Jónsson (Skj B) interprets the phrase to refer to Innsteinn’s own shoulders, but this seems a less likely interpretation than one that envisages fire affecting the whole group of men (cf. st. 21/6 öðlings vinum ‘the prince’s friends’).
